DDOT Launches “Share the Road” Campaign and Highlights Nation’s Capital as Walking and Biking City
“Be Safe, Share the Road!” Billboard Campaign Gets Rolling; New Walking and Bicycling Videos Unveiled

Contact (Media Only): Erik Linden (202) 671-2004

(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) this week launched a new series of advertisements and outreach efforts to encourage motorist, pedestrian and bicycling safety across the District of Columbia.

The effort is a two-pronged approach featuring billboards across the District—located in seven of the city’s eight wards—encouraging residents and commuters to “Be Safe, Share the Road!” and new bicycling and walking videos airing at local movie theaters.

The “Be Safe, Share the Road!” campaign is part of DDOT’s long-term agreement with Clear Channel/Adshel, which is in the process of replacing the District’s bus shelters across the city. As part of the agreement, signed by Mayor Anthony A. Williams, DDOT was given the free use of 40 existing billboards (measuring 12 feet wide by 6 feet high) to promote safety and other issues.

“At DDOT, safety always has been and always will be our number one priority,” said Michelle L. Pourciau, DDOT Director. “With our new ‘Share the Road’ billboards we can help spread the word that as our city grows and modes of transportation vary, we must ensure safety on all fronts. That means drivers looking out for bikers and pedestrians—and the other way around. It’s a three-way street!”

The new videos are currently showing in two movie theatres in the District. At the Loews Georgetown 14, the videos run on screens before films begin. At the Regal Gallery Place Stadium 14, the videos run on TV screens in the lobby concession area. The videos promote the concept of bicycling and walking as healthy and inexpensive modes of transportation. They will also be shown as Public Service Announcements on local TV stations.

“I’m looking forward to residents and visitors having the chance to view these new videos,” said Pourciau. “They do a great job emphasizing what a great walking and biking town the District is.”
