(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is scheduled to host a citywide public meeting as part of the DC Pedestrian Master Plan. The meeting–the first of its kind in District of Columbia history–will take place on Thursday, May 3, 2007 from 7-8:30 pm at the Columbia Heights Recreational Center, 1480 Girard Street, NW.
The plan is part of a process that will examine all aspects of the District's pedestrian environment - from policies to design guidelines to specific safety improvements in some of the city's highest pedestrian crash corridors. The plan is due to be completed in October 2007 and currently DDOT and its partners are seeking public input through a variety of means including focus groups, an online survey and this citywide meeting. Last year, 17 pedestrians were struck and killed in the District. In 2005, 16 pedestrians were struck and killed.
The citywide public meeting will introduce the public to the plan, its purpose and scope. Participants will learn about the public participation strategies being used throughout the planning process and will hear the results of the citywide online survey. Participants will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the priority corridors in the District that are being proposed for more detailed analysis to improve pedestrian safety and access. The agenda for the public meeting will include topics such as:
- Citywide pedestrian issues and initiatives
- Purpose and goals of the Pedestrian Master Plan
- project scope
- policy and facility improvements
- Public involvement strategies
- Results of the citywide online survey
- Identification of priority pedestrian areas for detailed analysis
- Map review and comment on priority pedestrian areas
The venue is pedestrian- and bike-friendly and is conveniently located three blocks from the Columbia Heights Metro station and between major bus lines on 14th and 16th Streets. Motor vehicle parking is limited.
