WASHINGTON, DC — The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will host a Design Open House and Exhibit on Thursday, October 16, 2008, to present preliminary plans to improve the Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue corridor. The meeting will give residents an opportunity to review the proposed design options, streetscapes and water quality components.

Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue, between Kenilworth and Eastern Avenues, NE, is one of the six corridors included in the District’s Great Streets Initiative. By uniting infrastructure investments "between the curbs" with economic development support "behind the curb," DDOT and its program partners aim to reposition the Great Streets corridors as vibrant and unique community centers that meet the needs of local residents, visitors, workers and entrepreneurs.

Nannie Helen Burroughs is a 1.5 mile long minor arterial and multi-modal corridor that accommodates regional commuters, transit riders, local auto travel, pedestrians, and bicyclists. The avenue also runs roughly parallel to Watts Branch, the largest tributary to the Anacostia River within the District. Because of its context in this critical watershed, DDOT is working to redesign the corridor as a model of innovative, environmentally-progressive practices, in order to improve the local environment and quality of life.
