(Washington, DC) As part of its previously announced work on the historic Klingle Bridge in Northwest, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will begin the third phase of work on or about April 6, 2007, weather permitting.
The third phase will involve structural work on the bridge as well as reconstruction of the middle lane of the bridge, which sits on Connecticut Avenue between Macomb Street and Devonshire Place. As in other phases, during the morning rush hour three lanes off traffic will be maintained southbound and one lane of traffic northbound.
During evening rush hour, three lanes will be maintained in the northbound direction with one lane southbound. At all other times, two lanes will be maintained in each direction. DDOT will erect variable message board signs informing motorists of the updated traffic pattern.
The $9 million restoration of the Klingle Bridge, which is proceeding on schedule, uses a combination of federal and local funds. The initial stages of the rehabilitation included work on the under-belly of the bridge, work on the sidewalks of the bridge and repairs to the road surface. Work on the bridge will include removal of old lead-based paint, cleaning the bridge girders, repairing/replacing components of the under girding and bridge surface and rehabilitation to the sidewalks and road surface.
Weather permitting, the project is slated to be completed in April 2008. DDOT will continue to update the public on the progress of the project. Hours of work are Monday through Saturday from 7 am to 7 pm.
DDOT reminds motorists to use extreme caution when passing through the work zone.
