DDOT Announces Constitution Avenue Northeast Traffic Switch Takes Effect

Contact (Media Only): Erik Linden (202) 671-2004

(Washington, DC) As previously announced, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) reminds residents and motorists that two-way traffic has been implemented on Constitution Avenue, NE, from Third Street to 14th Street, NE.

The roadway will run two-way traffic at all times. New pavement markings have been painted and all “One Way” and “Do Not Enter” signs have been removed.

Motorists have been advised of the upcoming change for several weeks via electronic message board signs.

The switch came as a result of DDOT’s Capitol Hill Transportation Study, which was designed to evaluate commuter patterns and impacts on Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

“This is really about protecting neighborhoods and making them friendlier for multiple modes of transportation versus the road simply serving as a commuting corridor,” said DDOT Director Emeka Moneme.

During the course of the year and a half long study (summer 2004 to winter 2006) and four public meetings, DDOT heard from residents that traffic speeds and driver behavior on this stretch of Constitution Avenue create safety hazards for residents along the corridor. In an effort to restore Constitution Avenue to a neighborhood street and to alter the character or “feel” of the roadway, the study recommended removing the morning rush hour operations.

DDOT will monitor the effects of the change in the coming months and will be analyzing any affects on the neighborhood closely.
