(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is continuing its major improvements along the Kenilworth Avenue, NE, corridor from Foote Street to Lane Place, NE. The $35 million project began in April 2007 and is scheduled to run through April 2009, weather permitting.
DDOT this weekend will close the Southeast Service Road and ramp for ongoing work. The service road is the exit that takes northbound traffic from Kenilworth Avenue to Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue and Minnesota Avenue. Drivers who need to access Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue will take the Polk Street exit, then follow detour signs. The closure of the service road is for one day only—from 7 am to 5 pm on Saturday.
DDOT has also completed the installation of a movable traffic barrier system on Kenilworth Avenue near Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue. This will allow for three lanes of traffic in the appropriate rush hour direction to maximize traffic flow during rush hour.
Weekend work planned includes: the re-striping of the lanes on Kenilworth Avenue from six lanes to accommodate five lanes. The use of the moveable barrier system will change daily allowing three lanes of traffic in the rush hour direction and two lanes in the opposite direction. Implementation of this switch will begin on Monday September 24, 2007.
Work next week includes work on southbound Kenilworth Avenue to the bridges over Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue and the bridge over Watts Branch Creek.
Motorists should, as always, use caution when traveling through the work zone.
