(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT), as part of its previously announced work on the South Dakota Avenue Bridge over the CSX Railroad in Northeast, has reduced South Dakota Avenue, NE, near Vista Street and 30th Street to three lanes at the project site.
This will allow the work taking place on the bridge to continue safely.
Two lanes northbound (inbound) and one lane southbound (outbound) will be maintained at all times except between the hours of 3:30 pm and 6:30 pm on weekdays when one lane northbound (inbound) and two lanes southbound (outbound) will be maintained by means of a reversible lane.
In addition, Vista Street will be restricted to local traffic only between 27th Street and South Dakota Avenue due to the closure of Vista Street at South Dakota Avenue. Vista Street is slated to remain closed in this area for bridge-related work for nine months.
Motorists traveling between South Dakota Avenue and Franklin Street are advised to follow the detour signs.
The $7 million restoration of the South Dakota Avenue Bridge uses a combination of federal and local funds. The rehabilitation work includes reconstruction of abutments and deck, as well as roadway and intersection improvements on both sides of the bridge.
Weather permitting; the bridge project is slated to be completed in March 2009.
DDOT will continue to update the public on the progress of the project. Hours of work are Monday through Saturday from 7 am to 6 pm.
