Advisory on Expected Snowfall in the District

Media Contacts: Erik Linden, DDOT, 202-438-7719 or Karyn LeBlanc, DDOT, 202-497-4572

(Washington, DC) The National Weather Service has issued a Snow Advisory for Wednesday from 6 am to 6 pm for an area that includes the District of Columbia. Forecasters are predicting accumulations of up to 1 to 2 inches of snow (particularly on grassy areas) with a high temperature of 35 degrees today.

DDOT and the District's Department of Public Works (DPW) spent the overnight hours treating the city's bridges and overpasses, which are elevated surfaces where road temperatures are lower than ground-level roadways.

The District's snow team will continue to treat roadways throughout the morning and afternoon as necessary and will closely monitor pavement conditions and respond with truck deployments as necessary.

DDOT and DPW remind motorists to use caution when driving today. As this is the first expected snowfall of the 2007-2008 snow season, it is important for motorists to be alert to roadway conditions and tune into media and traffic reports regarding snowfall and conditions. Public transportation should be used instead of driving during winter weather and telecommuting when possible is advised.

DDOT and DPW mailed the annual "Snow Guide*" to every household in the District last month. Residents should take this opportunity to become familiar with the guide, which includes helpful tips during winter weather and details the city's response plan.

The guide also reminds residents and businesses to clear sidewalks in front of homes and stores to help maintain safe passage for pedestrians.

Snow information and Frequently Asked Questions are also available on the Internet at www.ddot.dc.gov/snow.
