Icy Conditions Possible—Motorists Advised to Drive With Caution

Media Contacts: Erik Linden, DDOT, 202-438-7719; Karyn LeBlanc, DDOT, 202-497-4572

(Washington, DC) The National Weather Service is forecasting additional precipitation through 9 pm this evening. DDOT and the District's Department of Public Works (DPW) treated the city’s bridges and overpasses as well as primary and secondary roads beginning last evening and continued throughout the day today.

The District's snow team will continue to treat the roadways as necessary throughout this evening and will closely monitor pavement conditions and respond with truck deployments as necessary.

Temperatures throughout the evening are predicted to be near and below freezing. Motorists are strongly advised to remain cautious and maintain awareness of possible icy conditions.

DDOT and DPW remind commuters and residents to:

  • Use Metro when possible,
  • Drivers should use extreme caution and maintain safe speeds and distances from other vehicles, and to stay at least 35 feet behind the snow plows,
  • Remember even a 4-wheel drive SUV does not perform well in ice and additional safety measures should be followed, and
  • Be aware of road conditions, particularly black ice which can be deceptive in its appearance giving the driver a false sense of security on the road.
  • On average 100 disabled vehicle incidents a week occur as a result from flat tires or running out of gas.  Tips for avoiding a breakdown:

    • Have sufficient enough gas to get to your destination
    • Check tires for air pressure and tread conditions
    • Keep plenty of water and flares in the car
    • If you break down pull over and if possible to the right shoulder or as far right as possible.
    • Stay in your vehicle or wait behind a guard rail, if available
    • Activate car flashers/emergency lights
