Media Contact:  Karyn Le Blanc at (202) 671-3490

(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT), in its ongoing efforts to maintain and ensure the safety of the District’s network of bridges, is scheduled to begin work to rehabilitate a small section of the 11th Street Bridge in southwest. This particular section of the bridge crosses over D Street, the railroad tracks and approach roadways.

The 18 month project is scheduled to begin Monday, May 19th, 2008, weather permitting.

Work includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the replacement of the bridge deck, portions of the piers, abutment walls, roadway, retaining walls as well as improved lighting, installation of new traffic signals, installation of a new water main; and resurfacing of all of the approach roadways located in the project scope.

Detour Information:

Due to the nature of the work and to provide worker safety, the exit ramp to the 12th and D Street Intersection (ramp to the 12th Street tunnel) will be closed.

Vehicles will be detoured to 15th Street, onto Independence Avenue and back to 12th Street SW.

Motorists coming northbound from Virginia will continue to have access through the bridge via a temporary crossover lane to be created by expanding the 11th Street southwest roadway.
