Traffic Delays on New York Avenue
Motorists Advised to Use Alternate Routes

Media Contacts: Karyn LeBlanc at (202) 497-4572, John Lisle at (202) 486-5838

The District Department of Transportation along with HSEMA and MPD are working closely with WASA in an effort to detour motorists off outbound New York Avenue. There are currently significant traffic backups due to a broken water main. Repairs to the broken water mains are estimated to take until midnight at this time. The two right lanes of eastbound New York Avenue are closed between Montana Avenue and Bladensburg Road.

DDOT Road Operation Patrols are working to finish deploying Variable Message Signs (VMS) to assist motorists with alternate routes. Traffic Control Officers (TCOs) have also been deployed to assist with traffic control and maintenance.

DDOT has taken a number of measures to divert and direct traffic around the area:

  • There is a VMS sign near the 3rd street tunnel to direct traffic from New York eastbound to Rhode Island Ave.
  • There is a VMS sign along N. Capital Street, south of New York, to direct traffic to use Rhode Island Ave.
  • TCOs are deployed at the intersections of New York and North Capitol Streets and New York and Florida Avenue.
  • The traffic signal timing has been changed to help facilitate traffic along Bladensburg, Rhode Island, and Benning Roads.
