Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge Will Be Closed to Traffic for Routine Testing Sunday, February 22
The Swing Span will be open for boats to pass.

Media Contact: John Lisle, (202) 671-2004

The District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) is scheduled to close the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge (a.k.a. South Capital Street Bridge) from 5 am to approximately 10 am Sunday, February 22, 2009.  Crews will be conducting the monthly test opening of the swing span on the bridge and making minor repairs if necessary. During normal opening and closing operations, the swing span is lowered and then turned or “swung” around in order to allow water traffic to pass.

The bridge will be reopened to traffic as soon as the test opening and related repairs are completed.
