Kenilworth Avenue (I-295) Great Streets Project Moves into Final Phase of Construction
Lane Closures Expected Saturday

MEDIA CONTACT:  John Lisle at (202) 671-2004

(Washington, DC) The District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) is scheduled to begin the final phase of construction on the Kenilworth Avenue (I-295) corridor on Saturday, March 14, 2009, weather permitting. As a result, lane closures will be necessary to shift the work zone and allow for the movement of barricades and heavy equipment.

DDOT will temporarily close two of the northbound lanes on Kenilworth Avenue, in the vicinity of Burroughs Avenue, from 6 am to 10 am on Saturday. During that time period, one northbound lane will remain open for traffic; motorists should stay to the left to get by.

At approximately 10 am the center lane will be reopened for northbound traffic, but crews will continue to work in the right lane and on the service road ramp to Burroughs Avenue. That work should be completed by 5 pm and all lanes will be reopened.

The southbound lanes will remain open throughout the day, but motorists are advised that traffic delays are possible in both directions.

The Kenilworth Avenue Project is part of the District’s Great Streets Initiative to improve key corridors in the city with a significant investment in infrastructure and economic development. This $33 million project includes the reconstruction of Kenilworth Avenue, NE from Foot Street to Lane Place, and the reconstruction of the bridges over Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue and Watts Branch. The project is scheduled to be completed in November of this year.
