Reminder: Reconstruction of 9th Street, NE Bridge Scheduled to Start Monday, April 20
Two-year project will require lane closures and detours.

Media Contact:  John Lisle at (202) 671-2004

(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is reminding residents and motorists that work is scheduled to start on Monday, April 20 on the replacement of the 9th Street Bridge over New York Avenue, NE.

This two-year project will require the closing of the two southbound lanes on the bridge. To maintain two-way traffic, the two existing northbound lanes will be split into one northbound lane and one southbound lane until the new bridge is completed.

That lane shift will require closing off access from Brentwood Parkway northbound onto the 9th Street Bridge. Also, the ramp from the southbound 9th Street Bridge to westbound New York Avenue will be closed.

Motorists will be directed to marked detours (see map*):

  • Southbound traffic on 9th Street can take Brentwood Parkway to Penn Street to access New York Avenue.
  • Northbound traffic on Brentwood Parkway can take Penn Street to eastbound New York Avenue, and then use the ramp to the northbound 9th Street Bridge.

The existing 9th Street Bridge was built in 1940 and has outlived its intended service life. An entirely new structure will be constructed to the west of the existing bridge and the approach roadways will be re-aligned. Once that construction is completed next year, traffic will be shifted on to the new bridge and the existing structure will be torn down.

For more information, or to see a map of the closures and detours, please visit the project website at www.9thstreetbridge.org.
