Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge Swing Span Opening Sunday

DDOT is scheduled to close the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge (aka South Capitol Street Bridge) for routine testing, from 4 am to approximately 9 am on Sunday, October 4, 2009.

During normal opening and closing operations, the swing span is lowered and then turned or “swung” around in order to allow water traffic to pass.  Crews test the swing span each month to ensure it operates properly and make any necessary repairs.

The bridge will be reopened to traffic as soon as the test opening and related repairs are completed.  In most cases the work is completed ahead of schedule.

D Street, SW Closure

DDOT is scheduled to close a portion of D Street, SW for construction work on Sunday, October 4.  The roadway will be closed between 7th and 12th Streets, from 7 am to 7 pm, to allow for the partial removal of the 11th Street bridge deck over D Street.

Motorists will be directed to the following detour routes:

  • From 12 Street: SW, take a right on Independence Avenue, go right on 7th Street and make a final right turn onto D Street.
  • From 7th St: take a left on Independence Avenue, left on 12th Street, SW to get to D Street.
D Street, SW Road Closures
Should there be noticeable delays on Independence Avenue due to the Army Ten-Miler race, Jefferson Drive, SW will be utilized as an alternate route.

  • A single curb lane will be closed from 4 pm on Monday, October 5 through 6 am on Wednesday, October 7, to allow the concrete to cure.
