(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is scheduled to conduct work on the 14th Street Bridge this week that will require temporary lane closures during off-peak hours. Motorists are advised the closures could impact north and southbound traffic.
Northbound Lane Closures
A single lane of the northbound span will be closed:
- On Thursday, October 8 and Friday, October 9, from 10 am to 2:30 pm.
- On Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11, from 6 am to 8 pm.
The closure of the far left lane is necessary to install platforms for painting a portion of the bridge. Motorists should stay to the right to get through the work zone.
Southbound Lane Closures
The two right lanes of the southbound span will be closed:
- From 10 pm on Friday, October 9 until 5 am on Monday, October 12.
The requested lanes closure are needed to allow the contractor to make planned repairs to the bridge deck.
All of the lane closures have been carefully coordinated with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
Mount Vernon Trail
The painting of the bridge will also require temporarily closing the Mount Vernon Trail that passes underneath the south end of the north and southbound spans, but this work will be conducted overnight and therefore will have a minimal impact on pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
Beginning on Saturday, October 10, the portion of the trail under the bridges will be closed from 10 pm to 4 am. This work is expected to be completed by November 10, 2009.
