(Washington, DC) — The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is making progress on the replacement of the South Dakota Avenue Bridge over the CSX tracks in Northeast, and this week the work will require a temporary reduction in the number of travel lanes during off peak hours.
Beginning on Tuesday, October 20 through Thursday, October 22, 2009, there will be one lane open to traffic in each direction from 9:30 am to 3 pm each day, in the area of the bridge.
Currently, there are two northbound lanes and one southbound lane at all times, except during the evening rush hour (3:30-6:30 pm) when the center lane is reversed to provide two lanes for southbound traffic.
The rehabilitation of the South Dakota Avenue Bridge is a $7 million project that includes the reconstruction of the bridge deck and abutments, in addition to roadway and intersection improvements on both sides of the bridge.
DDOT reminds motorists to heed the overhead lane signals and to use caution when travelling through the work zone.
