UPDATE: Northbound Overnight Closures on Anacostia Freeway (DC 295) Rescheduled
Southbound Work Still Scheduled for February 3

Eleventh Street Bridge ProjectMedia Contact: John Lisle (DDOT) at (202) 671-2004

(Washington, DC) — The possibility of inclement weather has prompted a change in the schedule for overnight closures on the Anacostia Freeway (DC295/I-295) next week. The work originally planned for Tuesday, February 2 has been postponed to Thursday, February 4.

As part of the 11th Street Bridge Project, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is scheduled to perform overnight work that will require closing one direction of the freeway at a time on successive nights.

This is the updated schedule for the closures:

  • On Wednesday, February 3, between midnight and 5 am, the entire southbound freeway, between the Pennsylvania Avenue and Howard Road exits DC 295/I-295 will be closed to traffic for multiple 40-minute intervals. The right lane will be closed beginning at 7:30 pm the previous evening.
  • On Thursday, February 4, between midnight and 5 am, the entire northbound freeway, between the 11th Street Bridges and Pennsylvania Avenue, will be closed to traffic for multiple 40-minute intervals. In addition, the right lane will be closed beginning at 7:30 pm the previous evening. This is a reschedule, due to possible inclement weather, of closures originally planned for Tuesday, February 2.

In the event of inclement weather, closures and work on either night may be rescheduled to the next possible night and additional public notice will be provided.

To avoid delays during these closures, motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes:

  • Northbound traffic can use the 11th Street or South Capitol Street bridges to access I-395 North, then go eastbound on New York Avenue to return to I-295.
  • Southbound traffic can take westbound New York Avenue to the 3rd Street Tunnel, to return to I-295 south of the closure.

During the closures, contractors will demolish a pedestrian bridge that crosses above the highway to allow for the construction of ramps related to the new 11th Street Bridges. A new pedestrian bridge is to be built and open to pedestrians in the same location by Memorial Day Weekend 2010.
