Bilingual Multicultural Center Prepares to Open in Columbia Heights

WASHINGTON, DC - The Department of Housing and Community Development provided $1.9 million in Community Development Block Grant funds to renovate the Calvary Bilingual Multicultural Learning Center, which supports neighborhood diversity and offers learning programs for children and youth.

A groundbreaking ceremony and reception will be held on Thursday, December 9, 1999, from 6 pm to 8 pm at 1420 Columbia Road, NW. During the event, tours of the four-story building will be held, and the center’s bilingual children’s choir will perform. Invited speakers include Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, DC Councilman Jim Graham, DC Councilman Jack Evans, and Othello Mahone, Interim Director of the Department of Housing and Community Development.

“The Department of Housing and Community Development is working with Mayor Anthony Williams to support programs that strengthen our families and improve the quality of life for our children and youth,” Mahone said. “We are proud to support the Calvary Bilingual Multicultural Learning Center because this organization helps bridge the gap between our city’s cultures and teach our children valuable educational and cultural lessons.”

The Calvary Bilingual Multicultural Learning Center supports parents and their children from the ages of two to 15 and prenatal and first-time mothers. The center provides bilingual childcare services; supplemental educational and cultural enrichment programs; extensive information and referral support services; and computer technology access and training. About 90 percent of the center’s participants are from low-income families who live in the Columbia Heights, Mount Pleasant, Adams Morgan, and Shaw communities. Currently, 220 children and youth attend the Calvary Bilingual Multicultural Learning Center, and representatives estimate the number of attendees will triple after the building’s renovations are complete.
