President Barack Obama’s 2010 Budget Includes Nearly $20 Million for the District’s Permanent Supportive Housing Programs

(Washington DC)-President Barack Obama’s 2010 budget proposal includes a one time infusion of $19.2 million to boost the District’s Permanent Supportive Housing Program. The District’s Permanent Supportive Housing Program provides permanent housing and supportive services to chronically homeless individuals and families to ensure housing stabilization, maximum levels of self-sufficiency and an overall better quality of life.

District's Permanent Supportive Housing Program marks a transformation in the delivery of homeless services. Since 2008 the program has housed 427 individuals and 34 families. In 2009, the number of unsheltered people in the District decreased by nearly 15 percent, an unprecedented year-to-year reduction. The proposed federal partnership will enable the Department of Human Services to house up to 400 additional individuals and 150 additional families and significantly decrease District's chronically homeless population.
