Halfway House Resident Helps Capture Crime Suspect

(Washington, DC)  District of Columbia Department of Corrections Director Devon Brown applauds the efforts of a halfway house resident to protect the order and safety of the community.

On Thursday, May 4, 2006, the unnamed resident, who is in custody at a department contract community correctional center (halfway house), interrupted a crime in progress while working in the community. The resident observed a person moving unusually fast along the street carrying a package emitting a “red misty smoke.” The inmate followed the individual and flagged down a police officer, who in turn, apprehended the suspect.

“This is a perfect example of the value of correctional rehabilitation,” said Corrections Director Devon Brown.  “Not only did the inmate observe a potentially dangerous event, he also accepted his civic responsibility to step in and prevent the escalation of a criminal act. It may appear to be an unconventional way to give back to the community, but it is among the most significant way to protect the community’s safety. ”

According to police officials, the package was part of a bank robbery. Its dye pack erupted, causing the “red misty smoke.”

The incident is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department
