Opportunities available for local youth to learn a trade and earn money
(Washington, DC) The Department of Employment Services Office of Apprenticeship, in partnership with the Electrician Union Local No. 26, the Iron Workers Union Local No. 5, the Plumbers Union Local No. 5, and the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local No. 100, is actively seeking eligible District youth to take advantage of its pre-apprenticeship programs offered in four construction trades. The pre-apprenticeship programs, which will begin in January and February 2007, will run approximately 12 to 26 weeks. Candidates who successfully complete the pre-apprenticeships are guaranteed acceptance to formal registered apprenticeship programs.
The training will focus on the electrical, sheet metal, iron work, and plumbing trades. Participants in the electrical pre-apprenticeship program will be required to attend five days of on-the-job training and one day of classroom instruction, per week. Participants in the iron workers, plumbers, and sheet metal workers pre-apprenticeship programs will only be required to attend classroom instruction one day a week. Iron workers, plumbers and sheet metal workers pre-apprenticeship participants are paid a stipend of $30 per day. Electrical workers are paid $9.58 per hour.

To be eligible to participate in the pre-apprenticeship programs, the applicant must be a District resident, at least 18 years old, a high school graduate or have successfully completed the GED, demonstrate proficiency in algebra and geometry (particularly for those interested in electrical and sheet metal careers), be physically able to perform the duties of the trade, and be drug free. Access to reliable means of transportation is preferred. The applicant will also be tested and must score satisfactory in order to participate.
