(Washington, DC) District residents, interested in gaining practical experience in carpentry/ form building, drywall application, and reinforced iron work (rodman), are urged to attend the upcoming Apprenticeships in the Construction Trades Recruitment Fair on Friday, May 11, 2007. The recruitment fair, coordinated by the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES) Office of Apprenticeship Information & Training, will take place at the DOES’ Naylor Road One-Stop Career Center, SE from 10 am to 2 pm. This apprenticeship recruitment is solely for qualified and eligible District residents.
More than nine construction contractors are expected to attend the fair and conduct on-site interviews and, in some cases, on-the-spot hiring. Most of the companies attending are currently performing construction work on District government-assisted projects, which requires that a certain percentage have District residency and be employed as apprentices. Participating construction contractors include: Clark Construction, Miller and Long Concrete; Hensel Phelps, Brothers Concrete, C.J. Coakley Company, Inc., Anning Johnson Company, and East Regional Rebar, Inc., to name a few.
To be eligible to participate in the drywall application and carpentry/ form building apprenticeship programs, applicants must be a District resident, 18 years or older, have a high school diploma or GED certificate (preferred not required) and a valid driver’s license. While a high school diploma or GED is not required to participate in the reinforced iron workers (rodman) apprenticeship program, applicants must be able to fulfill the requirements to complete the apprenticeship’s classroom-related instruction. Applicants must also be drug-free and physically capable of performing the duties of the job. Access to reliable transportation is preferred, but not required.
All applicants are required to pre-register for the May 11 Apprenticeship Fair at any of DOES’ One-Stop Career Centers. Appointments time will be given only by the Naylor Road One-Stop Center. Contact the Naylor Road One-Stop Career Center at (202) 645-3413 for an appointment time.
Walk-in applicants taken only after pre-registered applicants are interviewed.
