District Opens 2008 Summer Employment Registration for College Students

(Washington, DC)  The Department of Employment Services announced that the registration and recruitment of college students for summer employment in 2008 with the private sector began today.  The early registration drive is an effort to accommodate college students, who are home for the holidays, to get a head start in competing for summer jobs and internships with local businesses.

“This early marketing effort is an intentional and strategic move on the agency’s part,” said Summer Spencer, Director of the Department of Employment Services. “By registering early, DC residents who are away at college and are interested in participating in our summer work program will have the best opportunity to identify and select summer employment that compliments their academic and career interests.  This will also allow us to improve upon matching young workers with employers that have jobs in their field of study.”

The early registration for college students, which begins today, December 10, 2007, will end on January 11, 2008.  College students are expected to accurately complete the 2008 Summer Youth Application, submit a resume, and provide proof of their District residency, date of birth, citizenship/permanent residency, and Social Security number.  They must also submit a copy of their most recent transcript to the Office of Youth Programs at 625 H Street, NE.  Regular registration for the summer youth program will begin for youth, ages 14 to 21, on February 2, 2008, Monday through Friday.  Select the link below for the downloadable application and registration forms for the 2008 Summer Youth Program.

The Summer Youth Program is a component of the DOES’ Passport-to-Work Youth Program, which ensures that District youth are consistently developing the skills and aptitude necessary to succeed in today’s competitive labor market.
