(Washington, DC) More than 150 employers from the private sector, non-profit organizations, as well as District Government and federal agencies are expected to attend Mayor Adrian M. Fenty’s 2008 Citywide Job Fair on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, from 11 am to 6 pm, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The event, sponsored by the DC Department of Human Resources (DCHR), in partnership with the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES), is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not necessary.
The job fair, which has created a lot of excitement in the business community, is expected to top the 2007 event. Last August, approximately 17,000 jobseekers and more than 150 exhibitors participated in the District’s Citywide Job Fair. DCHR and DOES are working to build on the success of last year’s event and expand the employment prospects for District residents at the upcoming job fair.
“This is a partnership that will create an environment to foster the human connection between organizations that have job openings and those with constituents that need a job or are seeking to expand their professional development,” says DCHR Director Brender L. Gregory on her agency’s partnership with DOES. “This strikes at the core mission of this agency to serve the District’s population.”
Summer Spencer, DOES Director, agreed, adding that the fair will be used as a conduit to bring job seekers face-to-face with local hiring managers. “We are targeting available positions for the entire job-seeking community,” says Spencer. “This also includes our young adults interested in summer work through the Mayor’s Summer Youth Program. Not only will they have another opportunity to secure summer jobs with local employers, but they will also be exposed to the countless industries and career opportunities available in the District.”
Job seekers are encouraged to bring extra copies of resumes. Young adults, interested in registering with the DOES Summer Youth Program, must submit a completed Summer Youth 2008 application form which can be accessed at DOES website and verification of their date of birth, social security number, and District residency.
