Unionized Careers Featured at Annual Youth and Adult Career Fair

(Washington, DC)  Today, the Department of Employment Services joins the Community Services Agency and the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO in hosting the Sixth Annual Labor-2-Youth Fair, from 9 am to 3 pm, in the Palladian Ballroom of the Omni Shoreham Hotel, 2500 Calvert Street, NW.

District residents, particularly high school students, out-of-school youth, and adult learners, will gain valuable information on a vast array of careers in unionized occupations, the labor movement and apprenticeship programs.  The fair will feature union-made products, skill and equipment demonstrations, as well as offer opportunities for participants to take part in hands-on activities and a game show.  The event is free and open to the public.

“This fair provides an exciting opportunity for our labor and apprenticeship partners to showcase unionized careers in demand occupations,” said Gregg Irish, Director of the Department of Employment Services.  “Youth and adult participants receive employment and training information about careers that can provide career growth and economic stability.”

Exhibitors at the fair include:  Verizon with the Communications Workers of America, Local 2336, Giant Food LLC and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 639, OIC of Washington, DC, US Census Bureau, and ten (10) building and construction trades apprenticeship programs.

The fair is sponsored in partnership with the DC Department of Employment Services and the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO youth and adult workforce development program, Building Futures.  The Labor-2-Youth Union Fair supports the Mayor’s highest priorities for workforce development – the expansion and improvement of effective services to District youth.
