DC Department of Employment Services Receives Grant from National Nonprofit to Train Low-Income Seniors for Employment

(Washington, DC) The Department of Employment Services will receive $297,960 this year to provide on-the-job training and employment placement services to low-income adults over age 55 who face multiple obstacles to employment. DC Department of Employment Services offers these services through the Senior AIDES Program, which gives seniors education and work experience through paid service assignments within local communities.

The grant is one of 108 made to nonprofit and local government organizations in 23 states and the District of Columbia by the Washington, DC-based Senior Service America. Senior Service America received a grant for more than $50 million from the US Department of Labor Employment Training Administration to fund and administer the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) called Senior AIDES.

“We are proud to renew our grants to organizations like DC Department of Employment Services who have consistently proven to be strong performers with the Senior AIDES Program,” says Tony Sarmiento, Executive Director of Senior Service America. For at least the past five years, DC Department of Employment Services has met its goals of placing a required percentage of its Senior Aides into unsubsidized job placements and helped to improve their financial well-being. From 1998 to 2003, the goals ranged from placing 25 to 30 percent of program enrollees.

For more information about the Senior AIDES Program, call (301) 578-8825 or email drounds@ssa-i.org.  To contact the Department of Employment Services Senior Community Service Employment Program, call (202)698-5700.
