Careers in the Building Trades Featured at Apprenticeship Career Day

(Washington, DC)  Eighteen trade unions will provide information on apprenticeship career opportunities at an Apprenticeship Career Day on Saturday, February 19, 2005, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 222 M Street, SW, from 10 am to 2 pm.  The building trades are currently recruiting District residents for current and future construction projects in the city and the surrounding metropolitan area.

The Career Fair is sponsored by the Washington Interfaith Network (WIN) and the Washington, DC Building and Construction Trades Council in collaboration with the Department of Employment Services.

Officials from the following trade areas will be at the Career Day event: electrician, bricklayer, plumber, steamfitter, sheet metal worker, elevator constructor, sprinkler-fitter, roofer, insulation worker, reinforced rodmen, iron worker, painter, and others.

The apprenticeship programs for the building trades consist of on-the-job training and classroom related instruction.  The training period can range from 3 – 5 years depending on the specific trade.  Apprentices earn while they learn and receive incremental pay increases.  All apprentice completers receive national certification.  Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, physically able to perform the duties of the trade, be drug free, have a high school diploma or GED; however, some programs do not have this requirement.

For additional information contact the Office of Apprenticeship Information and Training at 698-5099.
