Registration Opens for the 2005 Summer Youth Employment Program - Releases

(Washington, DC) The Department of Employment Services opened registration for the 2005 Passport-to-Work Summer Youth Employment Program on Monday, March 14, 2005.

Youth interested in registering for a summer job can pick-up an application* from the Department’s Office of Youth Programs, located at 625 H Street, NE, Washington, DC. The Office is open Monday-Friday, 9 am to 4:30 pm, and until 6 pm, on Wednesdays, beginning April 6, 2005. The deadline for applications is April 30, 2005.

This year, the department is making the registration process easier by having youth complete and drop-off their applications, a Certification and Consent Form with documentation to verify their date of birth, citizenship or alien status, social security number, and proof of District residency.

The 2005 summer program will operate from Tuesday, July 5 through Friday, August 12, and is expected to serve 10,000 youth, ages 14 to 21, in subsidized employment and job readiness training. Youth will be referred to jobs within the District government and non-profit organizations, where they will earn the federal minimum wage of $5.15 per hour, working 20-30 hours per week (based on their age). Additionally, youth who compete for positions in the private and federal sectors can earn up to $12 an hour.

“Summer employment provides youth with an excellent opportunity to learn more about career opportunities in the District of Columbia,” said Department of Employment Services Director Gregg Irish. “The six-week summer program offers job readiness and leadership training, as well as temporary employment for thousands of youth, while they also learn the responsibility of earning and managing a salary.”
