(Washington, DC) District of Columbia youth have three more days to register for a summer job through the Department of Employment Services’ (DOES) Passport-to-Work Summer Youth Employment Program. Teens and young adults ages 14 to 21, have until Friday, April 30, 2004 to sign up at the Office of Youth Programs, 625 H Street, NE. Registration will be held Wednesday from 9 am to 6 pm, Thursday and Friday from 9 am until 4:30 pm.
Passport-to-Work is a year-round youth employment program that is dedicated to providing city youth with work and training opportunities. The program provides youth with skills development through jobs, on-the-job training and educational activities.
Last summer, more than 5,000 young people participated in the five-week employment program. This year, 5,000 young workers will be placed primarily in the public sector, local and federal government agencies, making a minimum of $5.15 per hour (based on work experience and age). All subsidized summer jobs will be paid for with federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA), local and private funds. Private businesses are also encouraged to hire youth through the Department of Employment Services.
For the past two years, the Passport-to-Work Program has solicited local businesses to hire city youth during the summer. By hiring youth workers, businesses can fulfill their temporary staffing needs when regular employees take summer vacations, benefit from work opportunity tax credits, and help to mold the District’s future workforce. Private employers pay $6.15 to $12 per hour, based on the job and the skills required.
