(Washington, DC) The Mayor’s Youth Leadership Institute (MYLI), sponsored by the Department of Employment Services, will end its 2006 Summer Youth Employment Program on Friday, August 11, 2006 with a closing ceremony and the announcement of the newly elected Youth Mayor of the District of Columbia. The closing ceremony begins at 11 am and will be held at Howard University’s Blackburn Center.
Councilmember Kwame Brown, a former MYLI graduate, and Stan Kasten, President of the Washington Nationals, will be guest speakers at the closing ceremony.
“It is gratifying to see young people take an active interest in their communities and voice concerns about government policies that may affect their future,” says Gregg Irish, Director of the Department of Employment Services. “This training program is a great stepping stone for future city leaders and policy makers.”
The Mayor’s Youth Leadership Institute (MYLI) is a year-round, four level program designed to train District youth, ages 14 to 17, in leadership and self-development. The program allows youth leaders to shadow city government officials, as well as serve as youth ambassadors for the District of Columbia.
