(Washington, DC) On Tuesday, May 8 at 11 am, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation and the DC Office on Aging, will kick off the 24th Annual DC Golden Olympics with an opening ceremony at Emery Recreation Center, 5701 Georgia Ave., NW.
The DC Golden Olympics begins May 8 and ends May 11 at 4:30 pm with a closing ceremony, which will also be held at Emery Recreation Center. Each year, hundreds of seniors representing all wards of the city participate in this event. The DC Golden Olympics features four days of fun athletic competition, sports tournaments and health education exhibits showcased by the District’s senior population. Events include archery, basketball, billiards, bowling, horseshoe pitching, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track and field, and golf.
Many of the athletes competing this year will represent the District of Columbia in the National Games in July. Held in Louisville, Kentucky, more than 12,000 athletes are expected to compete in this year's National Games. “These gifted athletes are an inspiration and are true testaments to vitality, determination and pride,” said Wanda S. Durden, Interim DPR Director.
