Department of Parks and Recreation Partners with Washington Area Bicyclist Association to Offer Cycling Classes

(Washington, DC) – The DC Department of Parks and Recreation and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) is pleased to announce the 2008 schedule of free cycling classes for adults and children. The DC Department of Parks and Recreation in conjunction with the DC Department of Transportation and the WABA will offer Confident City Cycling classes for adults and Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety education events (bike rodeos) for children throughout the District.

Confident City Cycling is a free class that focuses on fine-tuning traffic navigation skills. Topics include Rules of the Road, Avoiding the Common Causes of Crashes, Lane Positioning, Improving Pedaling Efficiency, Useful Accessory Equipment and Basic Bike Maintenance and Repair Basic. Classes will be held at various recreation centers on Saturday mornings.

Kids Bike Safety Rodeos teaches children general biking safety as well as the finer points of crossing the street and controlling their bicycles. Classes will be held at various recreation centers during the spring break and summer camp.

“From Oxon Run Park to Rock Creek Park we are fortunate to live in a city that provides so many opportunities for cycling. We are pleased to be apart of this partnership with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association to provide bicycling safety to our constituents,” said DPR Director Clark Ray.
