DPR Calls for Volunteers for DPR’s 22nd Annual Black History Invitational Swim Meet

Event:  “Be The Water,” the 22nd Annual Black History Invitational Swim Meet

 

Dates:  Saturday, February 16 and Sunday, February 17, 2008

 

Time:  6 am – 6 pm on both days

Volunteer Shifts:  6 am - 10 am; 9:30 am - 2 pm; 1:30 pm - 6 pm

 

Volunteer Duties:

  • 300 volunteers as Timers (50 per session per day)
  • 20 volunteers as Relief Timers
  • 30 volunteers as Time card timers
  • 30 volunteers as Clean-up crew
  • 20 volunteers as Ribbon runners
  • 35 volunteers as Greeters and Crowd Control

Note: All volunteer timers will need to attend timer clinics held at Takoma Community Center, 300 Van Buren Street, NW. Clinics will last 45 minutes and are scheduled for:

  • Saturday, February 2 at 1pm
  • Monday, February 4 at 6pm
  • Thursday, February 7 at 6pm
  • Saturday, February 9 at 1pm
  • Tuesday, February 12 at 6pm
  • Saturday, February 16 at 6am (Officials Refresher Course)

Event History:   Hailed by USA Swimming, the national governing body for the sport of swimming, as the “premier minority swim competition in the United States and in the World,” the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the United Black Fund will host “Be The Water,” the 22nd Annual Black History Invitational Swim Meet. The meet was established to provide urban youth nationwide the exposure to strong competition, a positive outlet for self-expression, a forum of positive role models and the opportunity to visit the nation’s capital.

 

Event Description:  “Be The Water” is a two day event free event attracting over 800 minority competitors, ages 5 – 18, from  swim teams in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Detroit, Cleveland, New York and other U.S. metropolitan areas. The competition is divided into three (3) sessions each day, allowing swimmers to participate accordingly.

 

Saturday, February 16

  • Session I - Ages 13 and over - Event starts at 7 am
  • Session II - Ages 8 and under - Event starts at 11:10 am
  • Session III - Ages 9 -12 years old - Event starts at 2 pm

Sunday, February 17

 

  • Session IV - Ages 13 and over - Event starts at 7 am
  • Session V - Ages 8 and under - Event starts at 11:10 am
  • Session VI - Ages 9 -12 years old - Event starts at 2 pm
