Dominique Dawes to Deliver Inspirational Message to Youth at the 22nd Annual Black History Invitational Swim Meet

First African American female gymnast to win individual Olympic medal to offer encouragement about overcoming odds of race and gender in pursuit of one’s dream.

WASHINGTON, DC – On Friday, February 15, Olympic Gold Medalist Dominique Dawes will lend her support to “Be The Water”—the 22nd Annual Black History Invitational Swim Meet (BHISM) by delivering words of encouragement to the DC Wave swim team at its last practice before the premier event. Dawes, the first African American female to win an individual Olympic medal in the sport of gymnastics, will talk to youth from DC Wave about how to overcome odds of race and gender while pursuing the dream of being a professional athlete.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to meet some of the athletes competing in the 22nd Annual Black Invitational Swim Meet and to offer them a few words of encouragement,” said Dawes. “Swimming is not a sport that has traditionally had many minority standouts, but as the first African-American female gymnast to win an individual Olympic medal, I am living proof that these odds can be overcome.”

Also on hand to provide encouragement to the youth will be Bradford Tatum, an 86-year-old native Washingtonian, Senior Olympic gold, silver and bronze medal swimmer and this year’s “Be The Water” honoree.
