On the heels of a successful weekend of national competitive swimming at the 22nd Annual Black History Invitational Swim Meet, the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced that they are accepting applications from those interested in working with DPR as certified American Red Cross lifeguards. Free training, which includes conditioning exercises and the American Red Cross lifeguard training course, will be provided for new DPR lifeguards. All applicants must be 15 years of age or older.
“Lifeguards are an integral part of DPR’s ability to offer excellent aquatic programming,” said Clark E. Ray, director of DPR. “As we prepare for our busy summer season, now is the perfect time to make our appeal to youth to become certified lifeguards. Lifeguarding is a unique skill which can be used wherever life takes you.”
Interested applicants should submit a DPR Summer 2008 Preliminary Employment Application and the standard DC Employment Application (DC2000). DPR is also accepting applications of currently certified lifeguards who are interested in working with DPR. Currently certified lifeguards also need to submit a DPR Aquatic Application Addendum with their applications. DPR offers competitive salaries and an opportunity to become a year-round lifeguard. All forms are available on DPR's "Summer 2008 Positions With DPR" web page.
DPR operates 34 aquatic facilities across the District, including indoor and outdoor swimming pools. For more information about becoming a lifeguard or other summer employment opportunities with DPR, please call (202) 673-7603.
