The District’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), Takoma Aquatic Center is offering a new aquatic exercise class tailored to promote wellness for individuals with physical disabilities. Beginning Monday, March 3, the Multiple Sclerosis Aquatic Exercise Course (MSAEC) will be held Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10 am to 11 am at the facility located at 300 Van Buren Street, NW.
“By creating innovative programming that promotes healthy lifestyles and physical fitness for all District residents, DPR’s Aquatic Division continues to demonstrate that it has what it takes to be a national leader in quality aquatic recreation and leisure activities,” said Clark E. Ray, Director of DPR.
The course, designed and taught by Site Manager Sean Link, takes advantage of water’s natural buoyancy to increase participants’ mobility, flexibility, strength, and endurance by working through a range of shallow water exercises and stretches. The first series of this 8-week class is free and is available to people of all ages who have been diagnosed with a wide range of physical disabilities.
Link began his work with the agency twelve years ago at the DC Center for Therapeutic Recreation. He holds several certifications, including a Water Safety Instructors certification from the American Red Cross.
