The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced that field maintenance has already begun on baseball and softball fields in preparation for the upcoming Spring 2008 season. Field maintenance will continue for the next several weeks across the District, and includes a variety of work at each location, including mowing, fertilizing, weed control and removal, and lighting and fencing repairs.
“This year DPR is working hard to raise the level of our playing fields to meet the expectations and competitive standards of our leagues,” said Clark E. Ray, DPR director. “There are few things more exciting in Spring than walking onto a ballfield with fresh mown grass and a great looking infield, and hearing those two classic words, ‘Play Ball!’”
This year DPR will also be providing ballfield infield mix to a select number of fields. Infield mix is a manufactured product with sand, silt and clay that prohibits the growth of unwanted weeds and vegetation. It also doesn’t stick to cleats, and supports improved drainage of the infield.
A photo gallery highlighting the work underway is available on DPR’s website at dpr.dc.gov.
Once play begins, all DPR fields will be on a routine maintenance schedule. The field maintenance schedules will be made available to teams and the public.
