William H. Rumsey Aquatic Center Re-Opens for Lap Swim Only

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) today announced that as of 2 pm this afternoon, the William H. Rumsey Aquatic Center, 635 North Carolina Avenue, SE, is opened for lap swim only. Friday evening the facility was closed due to a mechanical emergency.

Currently, the temperature in the pool is 79 degrees. This temperature is conducive for competitive and lap swimming because the cold water promotes faster heartbeat, and heavier breathing in order to keep warm.

During swimming lessons and aerobics classes, where constant motion is not required it may create an uncomfortable environment for patrons. Water temperature for these activities should be between 83-85 degrees.

Other DPR Aquatic facilities remain open and are observing their normally scheduled hours. A list of DPR aquatic facilities and hours of operation is available on DPR's website at dpr.dc.gov, or readers can
