The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) today announced that on Tuesday, April 1, it will launch DPR Twins, a new, Co-operative Play for Socialization program for children ages 17 months to 4 years old. Held Mondays thru Fridays from 9 am to 12 noon at the Columbia Heights community Center, 1480 Girard Street, NW, DPR Twins will give identical and fraternal twin children the opportunity to have their first interactions with other children who often face the same difficulties as they do.
“The reality of this dynamic program being offered exemplifies the new direction here at DPR,” said Clark E. Ray, director of the agency. “Our staff members have shown tremendous passion and dedication to providing creative programming that meets the needs of our constituents. We are listening to what District residents want in terms of urban recreation and it’s working for us.”
The program was initiated by a call to DPR earlier this year from a coalition of parents with twins who inquired as to whether the agency could assist its programming efforts. “After hearing the needs of this group of parents, we thought it was a terrific idea!” said Marge Maceda, Manager of DPR’s Office of Educational Services. “DPR Twins is not only about the opportunity for socialization among the children, but it also gives parents the chance to grow and learn from each others’ experiences.”
The ribbon cutting and ceremony for DPR Twins will be Tuesday, April 1 at 9 am at Columbia Heights Recreation Center. Presently twenty-five sets of twins have enrolled in the program. The class is also for parents of multiple-births (triplets and quadruplets).
