The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) recently opened the newly constructed Riggs LaSalle Community Center, and tipped-off a season of Harry Thomas, Sr. Late Night Hoops. View the photo galleries listed below to view these recent community events:
- Grand Opening Celebration of New Riggs-LaSalle Community Center: On Saturday, April 12, 2008, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, Ward 5 Councilmember and Chair of the Committee on Libraries, Parks and Recreation, Harry “Tommy” Thomas, Jr., Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser, DPR Director, Clark E. Ray, and members of the community officially opened the new Riggs LaSalle Community Center, 501 Riggs Road, NE.
- Harry Thomas, Sr. Late Night Hoops Basketball League Tip-Off: DPR launched the “Harry Thomas, Sr. Late Night Hoops Basketball League” on Friday, April 11, 2008, at three DPR facilities in Ward 5; Trinidad Recreation Center, Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, and Langdon Park Community Center. Funding for the new league is being provided through the Ward 5 Gang Intervention Program. The new league will be active every Friday night, April 4 to May 23, 2008, with games running from 9 pm to 12 am.
- Riggs LaSalle Community Center Grand Opening - Media Tour: Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and DPR Director, Clark E. Ray, led the media on Friday, April 11, 2008, on a special pre-opening tour of the recently completed Riggs LaSalle Community Center. Among the features of the new facility are an indoor gymnasium with bleachers, weight and fitness room, computer lab, multipurpose room, and restrooms with showers and lockers. The building also has a green roof and DPR is seeking LEED certification of the facility.
