On Saturday, April 26, 2008, District residents are invited to the grand opening of the new North Michigan Park Playground located at 1333 Emerson Street, NE. A brief ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 12 pm.
The recently completed playground cost an estimated $984,000 and features two play structures, one for children 2 to 5 years old, and one for children 6 to 12 years old; a central plaza with five benches for individual and group seating; two chess/checker tables; and a paved walkway around the area for those looking for a walking workout. Twelve laps on the new walkway equals one mile.
“DPR is excited to open another new playground in the District and to be able to provide this new public green space which will help celebrate the local community and family spirit that is so vibrant in North Michigan Park,” said Director Clark E. Ray.
The North Michigan Park Playground is fully accessible and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Additionally, the new playground structures and surfaces have been certified by the International Playground Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA).
