“The Stead Recreation Center project demonstrates the District’s ongoing commitment to providing safe places for our youth and families to gather, play and have fun,” said Mayor Fenty. “It’s exciting to provide a new facility that meets the needs of the community and, once complete, will quickly become a vibrant public space in this neighborhood.”
This project at Stead Recreation Center includes the following:

- Construction of new central plaza with seating and artificial turf play area
- Construction of new planting areas
- Installation of new ornamental fencing
- Construction of new central shade structure
- Construction of two new playgrounds - playground for children ages 2 -5 will feature a new play structure; playground for children ages 6 - 12 will feature a new play structure and climbing wall. Both playgrounds will have poured-in-place rubber safety surfaces
- Resurfacing of existing full-size basketball court
“The continuing involvement and support of the Stead community has really made this project possible,” said DPR Director Ray. “DPR works every day to maintain and improve the recreational facilities and parks that we provide for our residents and visitors across the District.”
Additionally, the new playground structures and surfaces have been certified by the International Playground Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA). The project is scheduled to be completed in August 2008.
