DPR Hosts First “Stars and Strikes DC Youth Baseball Showcase”

Media Contacts Only:  John A. Stokes, (202) 673-2195 (DPR); London Hitchman, (570) 977-5019 (FBYBF)

The Athletic Programs Administration of the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) today announced that on  July 5, it will join the Foggy Bottom Youth Baseball Foundation (FBYBF), Greater Washington Sports Alliance and the Washington, DC District #3 Little Leagues to host the first “Stars and Strikes DC Youth Baseball Showcase.”

Aimed at showcasing the talent of the District’s young baseball players and garnering support for youth baseball programs in the city, the tournament will be held from 9 am to 10 pm at the Fort Lincoln Recreation Center, 3100 Fort Lincoln Drive in Northeast Washington. Over 20 teams, representing ages 5 to 12 years old, are expected to participate in the tournament.  The majority of these teams are from the District of Columbia.

“Baseball fever is catching on in the District of Columbia and DPR is excited to be connected to it,” said DPR Director Clark E. Ray.  “Stars and Strikes is another way our city is investing in building the baseball dreams of District youth. This will be a great day of fun for all and I am proud that it is being hosted at one of our sites.”

Activities for Stars and Strikes include a full day of little league baseball and softball games beginning with tee-ball games in the morning, followed by softball games and little league baseball games in the afternoon. Young players will be able to participate in instructional baseball clinics and other festivities, free of charge.

Additionally, from 12 pm to 7 pm, three clinics will be offered by John McCarthy of Home Run Baseball, Brendan Sullivan of Headfirst Baseball and Antonio Scott of the DC Grays.

Stars and Strikes will be capped off with an evening fireworks display following the championship games.  Admission to the event is free to the general public.  Parents are encouraged to visit the information center at the event to inquire about how their children can participate in youth baseball for the 2009 season.

According to event organizer Paris Inman, “Washington is a great baseball city. We are committed to developing great young players who not only love the game, but also understand the principles of team work and fair play that will serve them well throughout life.”
