(Washington, DC) - In an effort to support the District’s goal of providing safe, high- quality summer programming to youth during peak crime time periods, this afternoon the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (BGCGW) announced that they will partner to provide a summer program at the Langdon Park Recreation Center, 2901 20th Street, NW.
The summer camp will run from July 19 thru September 28 on the following schedule:
- Wednesdays and Thursdays, 6 pm to 9 pm
- Saturdays, 4 pm to 10 pm
- Sundays, 12 pm to 6 pm
Langdon Park Recreation Center is closed on Sundays, but through the partnership, the BGCGW will provide field trips for participants during these hours.
The partnership allows for youth development services for District children and teenagers between the ages of 6 and 18 years old to be offered. These services include video production, physical fitness activities, exercise, healthy eating instruction, modern, hip-hop, and African dance classes; modeling, organized game nights, drama and spoken word classes; and basketball clinics. Beginning in September, programming will only be offered on the weekends.
“We are looking forward to a long-term partnership between the District and BGCGW” said DPR Director Clark E. Ray. BGCGW Acting CEO Kevin Dowdell added, “This summer partnership will provide District youth and teens with safe and fun enrichment activities to participate in throughout the rest of the summer.”
Additionally, the BGCGW will actively engage in community outreach to enroll a minimum of 75 children and youth into this program at no cost.
