This August, There’s More Than Just Fun and Games at Your DPR

This August, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) promises to be the place to be for the best in urban recreation, athletic and leisure services. With summer in full swing and autumn a hop, skip and a month away, DPR invites District residents of all ages to participate in a wide array of stellar programming our dedicated staff has created with you in mind.

Before we highlight August’s events, as is our tradition, DPR would like to showcase some of the amazing accomplishments of our youth and express gratitude for your overflow of support in July 2008. Last month, in its first year of existence, DC Speed, the youth track and field club of DPR, sent 32 athletes to the USA Track and Field Region 3 Championship in Rock Hill, SC; six qualified for the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics; 13 new programmatic partners came on board and will enhance our offerings of quality services; hundreds of District seniors cruised down the Potomac with our Senior Services Division and enjoyed afternoons of hand-dancing, great food and more; and for the first time in the history of our agency, over 10,000 District youth are participating in our summer camps. What an amazing summer it has been!

In August, an abundance of fun, educational and informational activities await you at our parks, recreation centers and facilities. Highlights include our Youth Gardening Club, where you can learn about plant growth and gardening; a Summer Luau with Hawaiian themed-music, games and food at the Lamond Recreation Center; “Boxing Under the Sun” which highlight’s DPR’s Amateur Boxing program, the Summer Teens Night Out Finale for District youth ages 13 to 19 at the Harry Thomas Sr. Recreation Center; and “Fun Family Films Under The Stars” which showcases family-oriented films in DPR’s outdoor settings throughout the city for free.

These programs and more are here at your Department of Parks and Recreation!
