This afternoon, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Director Clark E. Ray, Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas, Jr., Chairman of the Committee on Libraries, Parks and Recreation, and members of the Ward 5 community took part in a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the beginning of construction of new playgrounds at the Langdon Park Community Center, 2901 20th St., NE.
“It’s exciting to create new spaces which meet the needs of the community and once complete, quickly become a vibrant public space in this neighborhood,” said Mayor Fenty. ” The Langdon Park playground project demonstrates the District’s and DPR's commitment to providing safe places for our youth and families to gather, play, and have fun together.”
The $795,000 project, which is scheduled to be complete in the spring of 2009, includes:
- Construction of two new play structures—one for 2 to 5 year olds and a separate one for 6 to 12 year old
- Central plaza with benches for individual and group seating
- Paved walkways
- Two chess/checker tables
- Poured-in-place rubber play surfaces
- Two new swing sets, one with bucket seats for young children
Additionally, to help manage storm water, DPR will construct bioretention swales - a special type of rain garden and storm water management system - to allow rainwater to seep into the ground rather than running off into streets and into the sewer.
“The continuing involvement and support of the community has really made this project possible,” said DPR Director Ray. “I look forward to returning next spring to celebrate the opening of the new playgrounds.”
