This November, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) promises to be the place to be for the best in urban recreation, athletic, and leisure programs. Fall is upon us and we invite District residents of all ages to participate in the wide array of stellar programming our dedicated staff has created with you in mind.
October was full of treats as District residents came out to celebrate and enjoy festivities at recreation and community centers across the District. Children and adults alike are expected to join us dressed as ghosts, goblins, princesses, and pirates for over 30 DPR-sponsored Halloween events.
Another October highlight was the phenomenal 11th Annual Heart to Hart Tennis Tournament at the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center (SETLC), organized by the founder of the Recreation Wish List Committee, Cora Masters Barry. Tennis legend Zina Garrison, and Councilmembers took part in celebrity matches. John Thompson III, founder of the John Thompson III Foundation, served as line judge and also hosted the John Thompson III Community Picnic at Oxon Run Park, across the street from the SETLC. It was a fantastic day for the Ward 8 community.
Also this month, DPR hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Riggs LaSalle Premier Athletic Field. Over four days of events, Washington Redskins players, community members, radio personalities and the Riggs-LaSalle community celebrated the opening of DPR’s first Premier Athletic Field. This multi-sport artificial turf athletic field is a sight to behold.
This November, an abundance of educational, informational, and entertaining activities await you. In the spirit of the month of November, DPR is hosting over 28 events where you can give thanks and give back to your community. There are Can Food Drives, Basket Give-a-Ways, and of course what would Thanksgiving be without good old fashioned Thanksgiving dinners with Turkey and all the trimmings.
From the Young Ladies on the Rise hosting a tea party, the DC Pop Warner Football Championships, to the Supreme Teen Club hosting a Thanksgiving Brunch for seniors, there is always something for everyone to do at DPR.
Last but not least, DPR’s Wonderful Washington Winter program guide will be released in November, earlier than ever before. Now is a good time start thinking about all the fantastic winter programs that will begin at the end of December.
