DPR Youth Athletes to Compete in Pom Pon, Pop Warner Football, and Track and Field This Weekend

Youth athletes of all ages from the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) were active in competition last weekend, and will once again take to the fields and courts again this weekend for pom pon championships, Pop Warner playoff football, and a regional cross country meet.

Citywide Pom Pon Championship
DPR will host the annual Citywide Pom Pon Championship Saturday, November 22, 2008 at Coolidge Senior High School, 6315 5th Street, NW.  Beginning at 11 am, 19 teams will compete for city champion honors, plus several teams will perform special exhibitions.  Admission is only $5 for 13 years old and older, and $1 for 12 years old and younger.

DC Pop Warner Football
Last weekend, five DC Pop Warner Football teams participated in regional competition, and four have advanced to semi-final competition this weekend.  This year marked the first season of play for DPR in the DC Pop Warner Football league, which is operated in partnership by the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (BGCGW).

On Saturday, November 15, four Division 1 DC Pop Warner Football teams took to the field for the first round of Eastern Region Pop Warner playoffs at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD.  Results of those games are:

  • Beacon House Falcons (Junior Pee Wees Champions) lost to the Charm City Buccaneers, 0 - 6
  • Beacon House Falcons (Pee Wees Champions) beat the 1st and Ten Cowboys, 13 - 0
  • Beacon House Falcons (Junior Midgets Champions) beat the Charm City Buccaneers, 6 - 0
  • Watkins Hornets (Midgets Champions) beat the South Side Chargers, 12 - 6

This weekend, semi final games will be played at Annapolis High School in Annapolis, MD.  The schedule of games is:

Beacon House Falcons (Pee Wees Champions) vs. White Oak Warriors
Saturday, November 22, 11 am

Beacon House Falcons (Junior Midgets Champions) vs. White Oak Warriors
Saturday, November 22, 1 pm

Watkins Hornets (Midgets Champions) vs. Frankford Chargers
Saturday, November 22, 3 pm

On Sunday, November 15, in Division 2, the FBR Tarheels (Pee Wee Champions) won their playoff game over the College Park Panthers, 14 - 12.  This weekend's semi final game schedule is:

DC Speed Track and Field Club
On Saturday, November 15, at the Potomac Valley Association Cross Country Regional Qualifiers at Wakefield Park in Annandale, VA, six members of DC Speed, DPR's track and field club, qualified for this weekend's Potomac Valley Association Cross Country Regional Meet at Pole Green Park, Mechanicsville, VA. 

The following DC Speed athletes will be running in the Sub-Bantam and Bantam divisions, on Saturday, November 22:
