DPR Boxers Bring Home 20 Medals at Two Tournaments

This past weekend, youth boxers from the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) marked the end of several weeks of local and regional competition by bringing home 20 medals from two different boxing tournaments in Maryland.

At the Golden Gloves Regional Championship in Walpole, MD, with approximately 300 boxers in competition from DC, MD, VA, NC, this regional 4-week tournament ended with three youth boxers from DPR's Bald Eagle boxing program winning gold medals.  DPR’s gold medalists included 17-year-old Antonio Madgruder boxing at 119 pounds; 18 year old Kevin Rivers at 125 pounds; and 21 year old David Grayton at 152 pounds.  Grayton was also named the Outstanding Boxer of the Tournament.  The three gold medalists will advance to the 2009 National Golden Gloves to be held May 4 – 9, in Salt Lake City, UT.

At the local Junior Olympics boxing tournament in Oxon Hill, MD, 17 youth DPR boxers from the Bald Eagle and Langdon Park boxing teams, ages 8 to 16 years old, competed with approximately 100 youth boxers from DC and MD over the past two weekends.

DPR's Langdon Park team had two boxers win silver medals, Gregory Burton in the 9 – 10 year old group boxing at 65 pounds, and Shadeed Floyd in the 15 – 16 year old group, at 119 pounds.

DPR’s Bald Eagle boxing team brought home 15 medals across multiple age groups.  Medalists from the Bald Eagle boxing team are:

Chamar Flowers - 55 pounds (gold)
Malcolm Lowery - 60 pounds (gold)

Age Group: 9 - 10 years old
Anwar Henson - 65 pounds (gold)
Jabar Henson - 70 pounds (gold)

Age Group: 11 – 12 years old
Devonte Jefferson - 70 pounds (bronze)
Keeshaun Williams - 75 pounds (silver)

Age Group: 13 – 14 years old
Tarryl Robinson Jr. - 85 pounds (silver)
Aujee Tyler - 90 pounds (gold)
Kareem Martin - 132 pounds (gold)

Age Group: 15 – 16 years old
Lawrence Singh - 90 pounds (gold)
Patrick Harris - 101 pounds (gold)
Darryl Little - 106 pounds (gold)
Parris Chisholm - 132 pounds  (gold)
Antoine Douglas - 145 pounds (gold)
Asia Stevenson - 132 lbs (gold) - female

The 13 - 14 and 15 - 16 years old age groups will represent the Potomac Valley Association and DPR in the Region II Championship May 1 - 3 at Rosecroft Raceway, Oxon Hill, MD.  In addition, the 15 – 16 years old champions will advance to the 2009 USA Boxing National Championships to be held June 8 – 13 in Denver, CO.
